Traditional Canoe Carving Demonstration

Traditional Canoe Carving Demonstration

Included with Daily Admission Ticket

Join us for an in-progress carving of a traditional hunting canoe, modeled after a historic canoe unearthed along the Green River in Auburn on the lands of the Muckleshoot people, now held at the Burke Museum.

The canoe is being carved from a 26-foot, 5,000+ lb old-growth Western Red Cedar log that was ethically sourced from a windfall. This ongoing work helps sustain the time-honored practice of traditional canoe carving, offering Muckleshoot children, Tribal members, and the public the opportunity to witness the process as it unfolds. Once complete, the canoe will remain within the Muckleshoot community and be used by Tribal members. The project is anticipated to be completed by Summer/Fall 2026.
