Mirror Mirror

Through 2026
Location: South Gallery

Cannonball Arts is anchored on our belief in our region’s creative and artistic excellence. This talent is not limited to one demographic or creative discipline – it courses through the veins of the city and manifests in a myriad of ways.

Mirror Mirror is an interactive, audience-generated exhibit that centers around a photography competition. Specifically, we invite visitors to point their camera at our exhibition mirror, take their best shot, and submit it for possible inclusion in this conceptual, weekly refreshed exhibit of 12 images. It is understood and expected that the exhibit will evolve and become increasingly elaborate, provocative and conceptually rich, transforming the gallery into a theater of sorts, populated with an audience eager to participate in the $17,000.00 in prize money. The introduction of performance, costumes, props, actors and other visual aids are expected, creating an environment that is spontaneous, unpredictable and immersive.

Mirror Mirror: The Rules

Voting

Place your wooden token into the box next to the photograph you think is the strongest conceptual entry.

Competing

  • No photographer can occupy the mirror platform for more than 5 minutes.
  • All submissions must be photographs that capture the exhibition mirror
  • Costumes and props are welcome but cannot exceed what the artist or artist team are capable of carrying into Cannonball Arts.
  • Participating photographers cannot clear the room or demand that the visiting audience get out of their way, move or follow the requests of the artist. Photographers must work with the audience in attendance and understand that they cannot fully control the environment or reflected image in the mirror.

Winning

  • All submissions will be reviewed by the Bumberworks workforce development cohort. BumberWorks is our free education program that aims to remove barriers of entry into the live-music and arts production for young adults, ages 17-25.
  •  A maximum of 6 new submissions will be selected and introduced to the exhibit opening each Wednesday. The top five existing works with the most votes are immune from being removed.
  •  Each week, the exhibited photograph with the most votes will receive $500 cash and an annual membership to Cannonball Arts (maximum three per first-place winner). Second place will receive an annual membership to the art center (maximum one per second-place winner).
  • At the end of the exhibit, the entry with the most total votes throughout the exhibition run will receive $5,000 cash and an annual membership for all participants in the making of the entry. The photograph to receive the second most total votes will receive $1,000 cash and an annual membership for all participants in the making of the entry.
  •  Any type of camera can be employed in this exhibit, and there are no limits surrounding the use of filters, photoshop or other image altering software. As a conceptual art exhibit, judges will select entries based upon their creativity and conceptual rigor – not technical ability, celebrity, beauty or computer generated spectacle.
  •  Participating artists must be respectful of the art center property, staff and visiting audience. Cannonball Arts reserves the right to disrupt and/or eject any visitors who are rude, disrespectful or compromising the experience of the exhibit. Express yourself with respect to others.
