Scott’s early inspirations were discovering contrasting elements in nature; the derelict combine harvester on an old farm, the rusted steam donkey hidden up in the Sierras, and flotsam relics washed up on California coasts. The repetition of textures, pattern, and color juxtaposed to the context in which they were found. This is the thread that runs deep in his artwork. There is an inherent physicality and repetitive modality in technique and use of materials in creating his site specific sculptures that straddle the worlds between art, architecture, and the contrasting settings in which they reside. The intension of the artwork is to be accessible, facilitate ones own narrative, and encourage exploration.
Not all sculpture belongs on a white pedestal in a white room. Virginia Park is our 2,200 sq ft indoor sculpture park on the northside of Level 2. Working with set designer Montana Tippett, a trail leads you through the park, passing by the Garden of Letters and Confessions, a small pond and numerous sculptural treasures nestled in the landscape. Trees, plants and flowers fill the space, with observation benches and a firepit designed by W. Scott Trimble to share stories and conversation with other visitors.
